Looks like the Democrats are raising the white flag on the NSA surveillance issue, according to the Washington Post:

U.S. surveillance laws should be reviewed and possibly rewritten to allow the type of eavesdropping that U.S. President George W. Bush has been criticized for authorizing, lawmakers from both parties said on Sunday.

Folks, if the Congress is ready to fix the laws, then the Bush administration was right. Let’s recall not all laws written are right, or what we would consider legal : slavery, womens vote, prohibition, to name a few.

While the Post lamely tries to keep the meme of illegality alive, the tide is obviously turning against the impeachment nuts

An audio tape by Osama bin Laden that emerged last week threatening new attacks on the United States has heightened security concerns. Neither party can afford to be seen as failing to protect the country, particularly as corruption scandals and public questioning of the Iraq war loom over November’s congressional elections.

The retreat has begun. All the democrats are doing now is trying to cover egg on their faces as they surrender before the battle has begun. The problem for Congress is they understand their impotent position

“I know of no member of Congress, frankly, who, if the administration came and said here’s why we need this capability, that they wouldn’t get it. And so let’s have the hearings,” McCain said on Fox News Sunday.

Frankly Senator, Article II authorizes the NSA to do what it is doing, so there is no need for the President to come to Congress at all. If Congress now agrees their lame attempts and FISA are now barriers to protecting the country, maybe they should get off their backsides and fix it themselves. Bush is not asking permission, he is offering Congress insight.

But his Senate counterpart Intelligence Committee chairman Pat Roberts of Kansas said he worried that the public debate about what the NSA can or cannot do would harm its intelligence gathering.

“Al Qaeda are not stupid,” he said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “I really worry about losing that capability and seeing a diminished capacity for the president to act and detect a possible attack on the homeland, then do something about it.”

Al Qaeda is smarter than the Democrat leadership, that much has been proven. When Bin Laden co-opted the Democrats’ calls for surrender and retreat they should have realized then they were being played by our enemies. But the dems are just not that smart. So maybe now Congress will learn to get back into their constitutional boundaries and be satisfied with the limited role they play in this country. Before ‘we the people’ decide to limit it further. I am not risking my family for some politician’s ego trip.
