Moderate Islam Facing Down Islamists
The GWOT is now clearly centered in the Norther regions of Pakistan along the Afghanistan border. That is where confrontation between the moderate and facsist arms of Islam is playing out:
Suspected Islamic militants attacked a military base in a tribal region in northwestern Pakistan, killing one soldier and injuring four others, an intelligence official said Sunday.
Troops retaliated with artillery fire after the rocket attack Saturday night on their base in Dattakhel, a village in the North Waziristan tribal region, which borders Afghanistan, the official said on condition of anonymity because of the secretive nature of his job.
…
In neighboring South Waziristan, suspected Islamic militants killed a cleric over suspicion he was a spy for the United States and Britain, officials said Sunday.
The bullet-riddled body of Maulana Zahir Shah, who ran an Islamic school, was found Sunday in Sararogha, a mountainous area in the lawless tribal region, three days after five armed men abducted him from his seminary, a local government official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly to the media.
Shah helped authorities run a radio station that aired programs critical of the militants from his school in Tajori, a town near the border with South Waziristan, an intelligence official said on condition of anonymity because of his sensitive job.
People always say they do not see moderate Islam facing down the fanatics. Well, maybe if our media would do their job we would know of brave heroes like Maulana Zahir Shah. We need to have a national recognition of these people fighting on the front line of the GWOT.
Everyone in Pakistan has the same names. It is so confusing.
They are all named Shah or Khan. And a lot of them are named Maulana (master).
This is a slight exaggeration—but not much.
There are probably a million people named Maulana Shah.
