US Taking On Muqtada al-Sadr Forces
Finally the US is taking on the forces of Muqtada al-Sadr in Iraq. It seems the Democrat plan to withdrawal forces may have lit a fire of urgency in some corners of Iraq. My guess is PM Maliki understands he only has so much time for the US to play a pivatol role.
.S. forces Monday night raided the homes of followers of radical anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, then called in U.S. jets that were circling the northwest Baghdad neighborhood and firing rockets, residents said.
“Occupation forces are currently carrying out raids against al-Sadr’s followers in the neighborhood of Shula,” Jalil al-Nouri, a senior al-Sadr aide, told The Associated Press by telephone.
Al-Nouri said there were gun battles going on between residents and U.S. troops who were using tanks and armored personnel carriers. He said U.S. Apache helicopters as well as warplanes were involved in the attacks on Shula.
This would be a nice case of some of the Democrats being right – if that is what is going on here. Even if it is not, I am sure the Dems will take credit. Whatever the reason, it’s about time.
I read about this. It also seems that Abizaid went to Maliki and told him he wanted proof that Maliki could and would shut down the militias. Negrpaonte has been over there as well in recent days. Apparently they want to put pressure on Maliki while at the same time giving him their support.
Much has been made of the survey group, but we do not know what is in it or what Bush will do about it. I hope the right does not go nuts with this the same way they did Dubai and immigration.
It is going to be interesting to see what happens as a result. The Shiite suburbs of Baghdad might not take this lying down if they see Sadr as their “protection” against Sunni death squads. But it needs to be done. In fact it should have been done long ago.

Terrye, it would be a major mistake of the rights go nuts over this. And I agree.
Jon Kyl’s filibuster suggestion may be another major mistake. Filibusters should be preserved for anything related to GWOT and tax cuts first

Hey, Strata, how many were kidnapped out of the educational
ministry today? The “insurgency” in all its forms is in the driver’s
seat; it’s the hapless occupation which is frenetically searching for a
strategy to thwart it.
I do hope the military will push harder to end this war. It has gone on too long mostly because they have not pushed hard enough with fire power. I doubt that this insugency cold have lasted this long if we had done this all along.
