Rep Jefferson Finally Indicted On Bribery Charges
It is about time Rep “Cool Cash” William Jefferson was indicted for making money through the use of his congressional seat:
federal grand jury will issue an indictment today against U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, accusing the New Orleans Democrat of multiple counts of bribery in connection with a web of business deals in Africa, a federal official said.
…
The FBI’s sting operation, the first of its kind since the Abscam probe targeting corrupt members of Congress in the 1970s, has already sent two former Jefferson associates to prison. Both acknowledged taking part in a scheme to funnel money to companies controlled by the nine-term congressman and his family in exchange for his help in promoting a telecommunications business in Nigeria and Ghana.
…
Jackson told investigators, according to court documents, that Jefferson agreed to help only if Jackson hired the ANJ Group LLC, a Louisiana company in the name of Jefferson’s wife, Andrea. From 2001-2004, Jackson sent to the ANJ Group $367,500 cash, paid for more than $87,000 worth of travel and transferred about 30 million shares of iGate Inc. stock, according to the government.
Jefferson was raking in a lot of money using his influence. I bet we find millions of dollars being funneled to shell companies set up and managed by family members. It is truly a sign of ethical judgement to see what kind of crook and liar dems and democrat voters are willing to tolerate in their midsts.
16 COUNTS!!! YOWZSA!!!
The ball’s in your court, Pelosi…will you have the GUTS or will you NOT??
Your hand has just been called.
William Jefferson to say the least is an interesting guy. That race were he got relelected turn on a lot of local issues that had nothing to do with him but long term political gamemenship
I am glad he is going to be gone, but conservatives will feel his loss in odd ways. HE was actually put into office by Republicans that made a deal with him that he would be open to Reagan Military programs and certain Tax cuts. Jefferson did not. HE also is quite a free trader and gave the vote that was needed to the Central American Trade accord passed.
For those that are advocates of Free trade we will have to make up his vote elsewhere
A replacement from that state will almost have to be free trade oriented due to the port of New Orleans.
Anything less would be political suicide with the voters there.
Also if it came down to a free trade or not set of candidates, support would come from out of state for the free trade person from all those states who rely on the port for export of their products.
Maybe, but I hate to say Bobby Jindal voted against it and his District is affected by it.
The story is of course Jindal would have voted for it if his votes was needed.
Even in areas where trade is helpful people have to fight the anti-trde currents.
I think the unoffical story in NOLA from democrats is thank GOD. I was down there around the Nagin election and people were wondering when the Feds were going to indict so they could run for his office. lol

Jury Indicts Jefferson in Bribery Probe…
Hat tip: GRIBBIT:

Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., was indicted Monday on federal charges of racketeering, soliciting bribes and money-laundering in a long- running bribery investigation into business deals he tried to broker in Africa.

From his bio:
“Jefferson is an active and senior member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and its subcommittee on Trade. He is also a member of the House Committee on the Budget.”
You’ll notice it doesn’t say he’s chairman of the Ways and Means Committee or the House Committee on the Budget. You know why that is? Because last year when the FBI raided hs office Pelosi stripped him of his leadership positions. The Democratic party did their best to oust him in the primary and general elections in Louisiana but the people of New Orleans don’t much trust outsiders telling them who to elect I guess.
Contrast that with Denny Hastert’s shrieking over the raid on Jefferson’s office and his years’ long cover up of Mark Foley’s scandals. And how about Boehner appointing Ken Calvert to the Appropriations’ Committee when John Doolittle had to step down pending his indictment? Turns out the FBI is delving into Calvert’s records too. Jerry Lewis, House Appropriations ranking member is not long for congress either.
If you’re keeping score at home here’s some info for you:

Man he’s last in the party and the entire chamber! This guy not only has less pull than any Democrat or Republican but with a -2.50 power rating he could probably cause your bill to burst into flames by glancing approvingly at it! .
Compare that to 4th ranking Repub Jerry Lewis

Power Ranking: 118 Power Score: 19.53

Lewis is probably going to retire next year unless of course he’s indicted first in the Duke Cunningham scandal. Like the disgraced traitor Duke – and that’s what people who bilk the national security apparatus of the US ought to be considered – Lewis is going to find out that resigning doesn’t make much difference to honest feds (but who knows how many of those are left in Gonzalez’s DOJ?) when it comes to felony charges.
And yet there sits Lewis as ranking minority member on the Appropriations Committee. 4th most powerful Repub and 118th most powerful member in the House. Why doesn’t Boehner force him to step down? LOL, have you seen the Republican House caucus? Replacing Jesse James with Billy the Kid isn’t going to curb crime in
Dodge City.
The Justice Dept managed to drag this out long enough to hand down the indictments just in time for the next Democrat President to fire all the US attorneys and drop the charges against him and other big time Dems. like Bill Clinton did. Anyone want to be this never goes to trial?
