Where Do These Lunatics Come From?
I swear this world is slowly being polluted with some form of hallucinogen because too many people have become psychotically paranoid. Take this nutcase for example, who used to work for Reagan and now thinks we need to impeach Bush and Cheney BEFORE they take steps to turn America into a dictatorship:
A former Reagan official has issued a public warning that the Bush administration is preparing to orchestrate a staged terrorist attack in the United States, transform the country into a dictatorship and launch a war with Iran within a year.
Paul Craig Roberts, a former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, blasted Thursday a new Executive Order, released July 17, allowing the White House to seize the assets of anyone who interferes with its Iraq policies and giving the government expanded police powers to exercise control in the country.
Roberts, who spoke on the Thom Hartmann radio program, said: “When Bush exercises this authority [under the new Executive Order], there’s no check to it. So it really is a form of total, absolute, one-man rule.”
…
“The administration figures themselves and prominent Republican propagandists … are preparing us for another 9/11 event or series of events,” he said. “You have to count on the fact that if al Qaeda is not going to do it, it is going to be orchestrated.”
…
The radio interview was a follow-up to Robert’s latest column, in which he warned that “unless Congress immediately impeaches Bush and Cheney, a year from now the U.S. could be a dictatorial police state at war with Iran.”
Going from a fairly standard order that makes it a criminal act to usurp the powers of the President in dealing with the Iraq war to planning a fake 9-11 is quite a fantastic jump in illogic. So this person is now so omnipotent he is a seer of ‘pre-crime’? Doubtful. What is bizzare is normally this person would be under supervision and possibly medication. What happens when one of these lunatics decides he has no choice but to take action to stop Bush before his delusions become real? And I mean more than push for impeachment. The lunacy in this world right now looks too much like the planet is suffering from some kind of mental disease which has everyone seeing things.
These “lunatics” are creations of the media. “attention whores”, in a very literal sense. Reminds me of a scene in an old comedy “soapdish”, where someone is trying to get an actress fired because she’s a drug addict and out of her mind. The producer/director says (paraphrased from memory) “well of course she’s out of her head! Of course she’s got problems! Why do you think they watch her??? Look at me, I’m normal, I’ve got a normal family, I say normal things, do you think people are gonna line up around the block and pay to look at me?”
That pretty much is what goes on in the media today, and is what’s going on here. No one wants to run or read stories that say the same old boring things. Writers and producers want something that will snap! Something that will get attention! Something that people will talk about! Same old same old will never do that – and so if some washed up bureaucrat who hasn’t had an original thought (or a real job) in 20 years wants to get back in play, some kind of outburst like this is his or her fastest ticket to that glorious 15 minutes. And, extremist politcs being what they are, it’s a great way for a forgotten nobody to get some funding from some partisans who find his pedigree useful. Quite rational, from the washed up hacks point of view.
btw, this analysis assumes, which I think is self evident, that all mainstream “news” in this country today is simply entertainment programming. Imho, it’s been that way for quite a while now.
Love the reference to the “Minority Report”! One of my favorite movies talk about the height of intrusive government and public paranoia.
Roberts is characterized by your quoted text as a former Regan Official, BFD he spent one year 1981-1982 as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy.
The wording pumps him up like “a former cabinet official”. Roberts opposed the Iraq War, and writes frequently on the subject. As far as that goes Richard Clarke was a “former Bush official”.
On May 18, 2005, in response to the publication of the “Downing Street memo,” Roberts wrote an article calling for Bush’s impeachment for lying to Congress about the case for war. Of the 9/11 Commission Report he wrote in 2006, “One would think that if the report could stand analysis, there would not be a taboo against calling attention to the inadequacy of its explanations.” (see Criticisms of the 9/11 Commission Report). He has reported what he says are findings by experts that conclude there is a large energy deficit in the official account of the collapse of the three WTC buildings, and says that this deficit remains unexplained. On September 14, 2006, he wrote: The explanation that the three WTC buildings collapsed as a result of damage and fire is a mere assertion. The assertion is not backed up with scientific calculation to demonstrate that the energy from the airliners, fire, and gravity were sufficient to collapse the buildings. A number of independent authorities believe that there is a very large energy deficit in the official account of the collapse of the buildings. Until this issue is resolved, the official explanation is merely an assertion no matter who believes it.
He is also quoted at prisonplanet.com with
“They challenge me to explain why three World Trade Center buildings on one day collapsed into their own footprints at free fall speed, an event outside the laws of physics except under conditions of controlled demolition. They insist that there is no stopping war and a police state as long as the government’s story on 9/11 remains unchallenged.”
Not only is he a 9/11 truther but he also jumps on the Katrina bandwagon
Bush’s war left the Corps of Engineers only 20% of the funding to protect New Orleans from flooding from Lake Pontchartrain. On June 18, 2004, the Corps’ project manager, Al Naomi, told the Times-Picayune: “the levees are sinking. If we don’t get the money to raise them, we can’t stay ahead of the settlement.”
At counterpuch he wrote
So by all this he also trying to throw dirt at the process of reducing taxes raises total revenue for the government, but still proving the case of why it does.
In the same article he goes on to say
A man truly a legend in his own mind.
I could provide multiple links here, but the comment would end up waiting in moderation.
In the same article above the fool pulls a Sooth for us and says about the FISA court
See the Febuary 6, 2006 CounterPunch article for these quotes since I don’t want to do multiple links.
Read the article and he even jumps on the Timothy McVeigh bandwagon all within one article and even throws in bashing Club Gitmo to boot
Read this one article and you will see Roberts jumps on every wacko bandwagon known to man like a bullited list of wacko talking points.
He has a whole archive of articles published at NewsMax, please don’t confuse it by their name with a news aggregator site, it isn’t
Just read the titles of his articles and it is enough to paint the picture. The content of the articles is even worse.
I have never heard Roberts say a positvie thing about this administration, ever. He used to be on Imus alot always bashing, bashing.
Great work, Merlin, on exposing Roberts for who he REALLY is.
I got two words for Paul Craig Roberts:
“Got Prozac?”
About a decade ago, I used to listen to the G. Gordon Liddy show on the radio (WJFK-FM, Washington DC), and Liddy used to read Paul Craig Roberts’ columns in the Washington Times all the time. These columns together left you with the impression that America was about two steps away from becoming a Soviet-style dictatorship.
Great work, Merlin, on exposing Roberts for who he REALLY is.

Thanks guy, this dude is so over the top it had to be said.
This was the result of very simple google searches that put it all up front.
It is not a hard thing to do.
The guy has been putting his stuff out on all to many sites that you could classify as junk science and when he gets a few minutes of fame on higher life form more visible MSM places it really shows how low they are dredging to get confirmation of their meme.
Geez this isn’t rocket science.
All I did, even though I have read about this guy before, is high lite his name in AJ’s post and right clicked in Firefox and selected search google for his name.
The rest just flowed from there.
It was like shooting fish in a kids inflatable four inch deep almost a pool.
There are a lot of people like this. I talked to a couple today. Father and daughter, both convinced that Bush had Pat Tilman killed, and lied to get us into war so that he could steal oil…right now they are pissed because a member of the family joined the military and is going to Iraq. I understand their fear for the young man, but the military is a dangerous profession. The woman was upset because she said she wanted her son to stay in the military so that he could go to school and retire in his 40’s and have lots of benefits. The whole fighting thing just seems to be optional to her.
Oh yeah, I forgot, they think the war in Iraq is wrong, but they think we should invade Pakistan. Oh yeah right, that would fix everything. I have been hearing more and more Democrats say this lately, forget Iraq, go to Pakistan. The fact that Pakistan is an ally of sorts, has a population of more than 160 million people, is a nuclear power and has a large and well armed military who might not like an invasion is just a detail.
Terrye
You have to remember the CIA via the NYT told them Obama, err Osama was there and we need to go kill that ba**ard.
Then we can redeploy to Darfur and stand on street corners with big whistles blowing them to call time outs to make happy.
Ah the glories of the Ktel generation.
