Far-Right Paranoia Leads To Silliness
Boy, as if the far right has not done enough to alienate America over illegal aliens, now they are taking on the icons of Science Fiction:
Jonah, as for your discovery of your distaste for Star Trek: The Next Generation, let’s face it, the show was a conservative’s nightmare unless, maybe, you’re Ron Paul.
Oh pulleaase. These people are freaked out over a science fiction show? One which had some semblence of think before shootting? One that respected the right to life (or why else worry about shooting?). It’s a TV show folks. And a really good one too! With all the real world problems NRO is worried about Star Trek? Seems to me they are easily spooked. Conservatism can handle a little story telling, and all the Star Trek shows tried to illustrate how issues are complex and not something someone should knee-jerk react to. Acting on impulse is a serious sign of immaturity. That is a real world lesson that Star Trek hammered home again and again in various ways. The federation never appeased its enemies, accept to demonstrate how wrong that was (The Cardasssians come to mind).
But I cannot understand why the far right would take a swipe at one of the most popular cultural icons in the last 45 years? It seems they are desparate to be rejected. Are we going to get into the “Harry Potter is the devil” crap now????
The only Sci-Fi guy to be wary of is Mr. Hubbard . . . and he was scary. And so are his minions.
I like Star Trek. Jean Luc was no softie.
Come on, AJ. They’re hosting a Star Trek day at National Review! Nothing written there on this subject is in any way meant to be taken seriously. The venerable, old National Review is devoting itself to trekkie-ism for the duration of the weekend. This is all for fun, a bunch of grown-ups indulging their life-long love of a sci-fi program.
Yup. Time to laugh a little, AJ. Learn one-liners from TOS.
I guess I just don’t see the problem on this one.
Thanks! I needed that! Don’t you just love it. Frankly, beam me up Scotty, there’s no intelligent life down here!

one of the most entertaining early internet flamewars I was involved in (back in the day) was a usenet thread (crossposted to many, many newsgroups) titled “Who is the best Captain? Kirk, Picard, Sisko, or That Bitch???”
gotta be a real trekkie to appreciate that one. (and screw the wankers who say “noooo, we’re trekkERS!!) And I tell you what, that flamewar got more intense and ugly than just about any political thread ever thought about getting, even today. Them were Fightin’ Words.
