We saw the same pattern in Iraq. Initial reports of a resurgent al-Qaeda turned over time to reports of locals rising up against al-Qaeda. In Iraq it was initiated through a movement now called the Anbar Awakening. And as I posted yesterday there are signs all over the place the same pattern is occurring in the tribal areas of Pakistan. Where the SurrenderMedia see a growing al-Qaeda presence I felt it was more a foreign invasion of the remaining Iraqi forces that would cause the locals react with the same backlash the Sunnis did in Iraq.

Now comes pretty definitive proof that al-Qaeda and the Taliban are wearing out their welcome and are losing local support in the birthplace of their movement:

Sympathy for al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden and the Taliban has dropped sharply in Pakistan amid a wave of deadly violence, according to the results of a recent opinion poll.

The survey, conducted last month for the U.S.-based Terror Free Tomorrow organization, also identified the party of assassinated opposition leader Benazir Bhutto as the country’s most popular ahead of Feb. 18 elections, and said most Pakistanis want President Pervez Musharraf to quit.

The poll suggests Pakistanis are looking to peaceful opposition groups after months of political turmoil and a wave of suicide attacks.

In the latest bloodshed, a bomber blew himself up at an opposition rally in the northwestern town of Charsadda on Saturday, killing 27 people and injuring 50.

According to the poll results only 24 percent of Pakistanis approved of bin Laden when the survey was conducted last month, compared with 46 percent during a similar survey in August.

Backing for al-Qaida, whose senior leaders are believed to be hiding along the Pakistani-Afghan border, fell to 18 percent from 33 percent.

Support for the Taliban, whose Pakistani offshoots have seized control of much of the lawless border area and have been engaged in a growing war against security forces, dropped by half to 19 percent from 38 percent, the results said.

Digest those numbers folks! In the birthplace of radical Islam around 80% of the people do not approve of al-Qaeda or the Taliban. Three quarters do not approve of Bin Laden. All of these fanatic fascists have seen their support cut in half since the Surge and Awakening started to succeed in Iraq. This is not coincidence. This is the success of George Bush and our military in turning the tide on al-Qaeda.

The Islamo fascists are not seen as the future of Islam but more and more as the enemy of Islam. And THAT is worth the fight in Iraq. Bin Laden and al-Qaeda have shrunk in popularity since we took the fight to them. They are now being relegated to that part of human history that include other despots like Hitler, Stalin and Saddam Hussein to name a few. This is a huge victory of America in our war on terror, to have those who helped birth the Islamo Fascist movement now turning on that very movement.

Major Update: Pakistan declares its support for a peaceful, democratic future:

In dramatic reversal from just a few months ago, Pakistanis have turned against Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda and the Taliban. And in an equally stunning turnaround, in advance of Pakistan’s upcoming February 18th elections, nearly two-thirds of Pakistanis now intend to vote for the Pakistan People’s Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, pushing the former ruling party PML-Q into third place.

The momentous events of the past several months-President Musharraf’s crackdown against the press and opposition figures, increased terrorist attacks by Al Qaeda and the Taliban, and the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto-have resulted in a sea change in Pakistani public opinion. While the public has overwhelmingly turned against Musharraf, Bin Laden, Al Qaeda and the Taliban, the people have also made a dramatic shift in support of Pakistan’s moderate, democratic political forces. In TFT’s previous August survey, less than 40 percent said they would vote for the leading moderate political parties, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Pakistan has had its fill of al-Qaeda and the radical elements of the Taliban. This is a huge blow to Bin Laden and just as huge a victory for America. al-Qaeda is now losing on the two main fronts of the war on terror: Iraq and Pakistan. Thank goodness George Bush did not prematurely surrender to al-Qaeda and give them an unearned victory. Is it any wonder that al-Qaeda and the Taliban are as popular are the Democrat Congress is in America? I don’t think that is a coincidence. So maybe Sen Obama can explain again how he wants to negotiate with Iran and invade Pakistan? I am still not getting the logic behind that one.
