As Expected: Tancredo Too Radical Even For His Own District

Published by at 8:10 am under All General Discussions,Illegal Immigration

I had my suspicions that Tancredo left Congress because he was too much of an immigration hypochondriac for even his own district. Seems I was right:

Colorado’s 6th Congressional District is the pulsing heart of state Republicans’ anger over illegal immigration. This is the political home from which Rep. Tom Tancredo launched a presidential run based almost solely on that issue.

Well, maybe not.

An internal Republican poll that examined the attitudes of independent and GOP voters in the district — a copy of which was obtained by The Denver Post — found opinions vastly at odds with that conventional wisdom.

They overwhelmingly support a guest worker program, reject the idea that most illegal immigrants should be deported, and even support the idea of amnesty, a dirty word for politicians of any stripe, but especially for the four Republican candidates now running for Tancredo’s seat.

The uncertainty comes as the ground seems to be shifting nationally under the subject. The top-tier presidential candidate most vocal on the issue, Mitt Romney, lost to a relative immigration dove, John McCain. Exit polls in Florida showed that Romney’s anti-immigrant rhetoric may have contributed to his loss there.

The most popular stances essentially line up with a 2004 proposal by President Bush, decried as amnesty by Tancredo. In fact, some Republicans said one of the most surprising things about the poll, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points, was that it showed a substantial gap between the positions of Tancredo and his constituents at home.

Apparently there are some who question the poll, but it shows such large margins it simply cannot be that far off. And we have seen all the hard liners on immigration lose for two years now. One day people will wake up and actually listen to the American people. (H/T Reader SallyVee)

How about posting a copy of the poll so the rest of us can judge for ourself.

    Cricket,

Because the article did not link to it – since it was a private poll.

And besides, what did Tancredo get in the primaries? 2%? I mean come on, does a house have to drop on these people before they get the message?

The Denver Post got a copy, then they need to post it!

I don’t know about Tancredo or his district; but, there have been several special elections in other areas where the hardline anti-illegal immigration candidate beat out the soft on immigration candidate.

Americans do NOT want amnesty. Period.

They want the borders secured. Then they want the rest resolved. Most agree with guest worker programs and other aspects.

All anyone has to do is pick up the newspapers. There isn’t a day that goes by that some town, city or state has cracked down on illegal immigration. Americans are fed up.

Even McCain admits he has “heard the American people” and they want the borders secured before anything else is even talked about!!!

The amnesty bill failed to pass because Congressmen and Senators went back to their districts/states and heard the “American message” in every corner of their town hall meetings.
