From The Duh! Files
We all know the Iranian leadership are mad hatters bent on military confrontation with the West, and the US specidfically. In a country were I am assuming (I have not done the math yet) Iran could get away with 2-5 nuclear power plants easily for the next half century word comes out they want at least 20. But the best part is the rationale they gave to the west not to worry:
However, he said, “the West intends to impede the Islamic Iran in particular, and the world of Islam in general, from making scientific progress and development so that it could continue with its arrogant superiority over the nations and governments.”
Farhangi said Iran does not need nuclear weapons, “since possession of the weapons of mass destruction is basically considered something irrational in Islam (emphasis mine).”
Well, the entire ruling class in Iran is headed for hell then – becuase ‘rational’ is just not something any sane person would associate with these nutters.
Dear AJ,
Sure this will appeal to your scientific/mathmatical expertise. How
insane that that Iran needs help with there oil industry, has to import
gasoline but wants 20 nuke “power plants”.
We are all accustomed to American (and Western) innovation in just about everything. From Benjamin Franklin and electricity to Al Gore and the Internet, from the I-beam to the iPod, Americans have been messing around and creating things throughout the history of the nation. We take it for granted that people are fiddling around in their garages inventing oscilloscopes or wonder drugs or extreme sports. But what would it be like to live in a land where people invented nothing, where technology came to you as though from Mars? More than this: what if that constant progress and tinkering represented a threat to the sufficiency of the founding documents of your culture and religion? Judging by the numbers, that is apparently the current state of thought in some major Islamic countries. Take Saudi Arabia, which recently went six years without granting a patent.
“The Saudi Patent Regulations of 1989 established a patent registration system, covering any new article, methods of manufacture (including improvements in either of them) and product patents. In 1996, the Saudi Patent Office granted its first patents since its establishment in 1990.”
By contrast, the US granted 157,000 patents in 2005, and is up to about 7,000,000 patents overall. Or take Egypt, home to about a quarter of the world’s Arabs:
