Can Dems Pull Another Torricelli In New Jersey?

Published by at 6:50 am under 2006 Elections,All General Discussions

The New York Observer is contemplating the possibility that NJ Dems will try and pull another “Torricelli” by illegaly replacing their tainted candidate prior to the General Election. A candidate that was handpicked by the Democrat Governor (and party it is presumed) whose Senate seat the candidate (Menedez) now holds. My guess is the Dems could get away with it in the sense they could name someone else (they have court decisions from judges who violated the written laws of the state), but it would cement a Keane win and might cause a nationwide disturbance. The Dems are rapidly becoming known as they party that needs to go to court to win elections and runs from legisature they cannot stop democratically (recall the TX redistricting). At some point the nation will stand up and say ‘no more, take your lumps in the voting booth like everyone else’. Geez, they picked their candidate! They have no one else to blame. [H/T RCP]

Well, why wouldn’t they pull another Torricelli? It worked the first time, didn’t it? It’s illegal, but apparently nobody big enough to seriously hurt the NJ Dems actually complained.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find out one day that New Jersey gets ballsy enough to try switching candidates right on Election Day.
