Another Russian Spy Thriller
It seems there are real Russian spies out there, and my guess is they are working with The West to monitor terrorist activities. This is one truly interesting story of a Russian spy uncovered in Canada who is being deported in the most gentlemanly way (which tells me Canada determined his efforts were in the best interest of all and is simply giving him a way out of Canada):
A suspected spy going under the name Paul William Hampel admitted Russian origin yesterday. Hampel was arrested in Montreal airport November 14, 2006 and will probably be deported from Canada very soon.
Paul William Hampel said he had used forged documents, revealed he was Russian and agreed to the soon deportation, one of his attorneys said yesterday. The judge that tries the case confirmed the information but declined to disclose the real name of the accused to protect him and his family.
A man claiming to be Paul William Hampel was detained November 14 in the Trudeau Airport, carrying fake documents, about $7,000 in different currencies, three cellular phones together with five SIM cards, two digital cameras and a shortwave radio. The set proved enough to evoke suspicions.
There is good reason to believe this to be a case of one of the good guys accidentally detected. Canada is a well known haven for Al Qaeda ‘retirees’, and is associated with efforts to free a known Al Qaeda terrorist.
This has been a very interesting case. Particularly the care shown in dealing with him. Why would the Russians have been interested in al Qaida in Canada in 1996, though.
It is possible he wasn’t doing his “work” in Canada but was simply based there. He could then fly on “business” to another country acting as your average mild-mannered Canadian polonium salesman (sorry, couldn’t resist) and conduct business or do his spying appearing as a Canadian.
“It seems there are real Russian spies out there, and my guess is they are working with The West to monitor terrorist activities”
My guess is you are wrong as often as right on this score.
Ken, white is white
There are as many, if not more, Russian spies in Canada , the UK and the US now than there were during the Cold War. I vote with Ken.
This”three cellular phones together with five SIM cards, two digital cameras and a shortwave radio” sounds like a modern version of the Twelve Days of Christmas if you say it fast enough.
