Dems Empty Threats

Published by at 10:15 am under All General Discussions

I posted previously on the empty threat coming from Congress to stop funding for the new strategy in Iraq. Basically my point was the DoD has the money to get everyone in place and going for some time. So the Congress cannot stop the effort. Add to that Congress needs to override a certain veto and they are all just enjoying listening to themselves yammer while our brave men and women are doing all the sacrificing. Spook86 over at In From The Cold adds more detail to my point about the DoD having the resources to get things rolling, leaving Congress only one choice on the funding front – leave the troops hanging. Possibly literally. Dems seem to want to recreate Black Hawk Down, but on a national scale this time. That was the last time our troops were denied the material and resources to do their mission. And they paid a heavy price and inspired Bin Laden to plan for 9-11.

…….and by the way Zinni was incharge of that operation.

If they cut the funds to the troops there will be a revolution in this country like nothing we have seen before. They won’t do it if they want to win in 2007.

and as i commented in that same thread, you’re mistaken. the war in iraq is not funded through the regular DoD budget. instead, it is funded through a series of periodic “emergency funding” billls that are not part of the normal budgetary process. you know, like that bill the kerry said he voted for it before he voted against it. the iraq study group recommended that the war be included in the normal DoD budget, but it is expected that bush will ignore that recommendation just as he’s ignoring all the others.

funding the war through ad hoc emergency spending bills worked to the administration’s advantage as long as the war was popular. now that it’s not, it just makes it easier for the new democratic majority to specifically block or restrict war spending.

when the next emergency spending bill will be needed is a bit of a mystery. thus far it has happened every 6 months or so. but it’s hard to say for certain because spending on the war is not publicized. but it’s already been a few months and this escalation of forces probably will mean and increase in spending, so dems might just get their chance to debate funding of the war relatively soon
