I ALWAYS STAND WITH A MAN WHEN HE IS RIGHT.

And that's exactly why opposing George Bush on the Surge is the morally correct position to take. Thanks for making the point, Carol.

PAINTING LINCOLN BY HIS OWN WORDS!

Here's one few remember: I STAND WITH PEOPLE WHEN THEY ARE RIGHT.

During his time, there were two issues radicals were burning to use. The abolishion of slavery. AND, the prohibition of drink. And, on these two, during the 1850's, Lincoln saw the Whigs unable to survive. They just dissolved. (That's why Lincoln joined the republican ticket.)

He also did NOT campaign, once he was nominated in 1860. He knew if he gave speeches, the press would destroy him, and hang albatrosses around his neck.

SO, in the 1850's, when he was questioned about how deeply he felt for the opinions of radicals he said. I ALWAYS STAND WITH A MAN WHEN HE IS RIGHT. (He said he didn't believe in partisan warfare.) And, this is true, also, in the posture he took during the Civil War.)

I don’t think that freedom of speech is the same thing as deliberately undermining the military in time of war for the sake of partisan politicl gain

So - who should the arbiter of what free speech is be? You? Bush? Cheney? I think not, thank you.

If the Admnistration thinks that elected officials reflecting the views of 60-70% of their constituency, and attempting to remove troops from harm's way, somehow constitute undermining the military - let the cowards in the White House and the Department of Justice charge them with treason and institute legal process. We are a nation of laws - and the Constitution is the supreme law of the land.

Otherwise, I suggest shutting the pie hole.

I fail to understand why people think I should fact check the media? Does any of the leftwing brain trust realize how ridiculous that is? I tend to only use references from 'reputable' new media outlets, but if they make a mistake (which they did in this case) how is that my fault?

It sounds like some real desperation on your side to find some minor faults with me. Have you been losing that many arguments here? Too funny! I'll give you a hint, I am not perfect - never claimed to be.

Whether Lincoln said this or not, he did take action against Copperhead sympathizers that would not be tolerated today. and I think that making an issue of whether or not war was declared is kind of bizarre considering the fact it was a CIVIL war.

I don't think AJ making a mistake about a quote is half as scarey as Obama saying he wanted to be a uniter, like Lincoln.

So, the bottom line is there is not one antique media that can be trusted to NEVER MAKE A MISTAKE.

Oh, gosh. That makes the New York Times ONE BIG CORRECTION.

Bring it on.

Memo to All:

AJ shouldn't be embarrassed by this - after all - if you refuse to SPELLCHECK no one should expect you to FACT CHECK:

this Lincoln quote I saw in a Washington Times article is an internet fake

1. The Washington Times IS an internet fake. It's owned by the freakin' Moonies for crying out loud. Nothing one reads in it is likely to be true.

2. There are a number of easily accessible sites to check urban myths on (factcheck.org; snopes.com). It can save one considerable embarrassment - but it won't do your math for you.

The important thing is that Abraham Lincoln has been exonerated once and for all of saying anything as stupid as the now-infamous:

Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled, or hanged.

Free speech and the Constitution be damned! Not.

DGF,

I don't fact check the media, I don't have the time. BTW, You are supposed to be banned - are you capable of mature discourse or should I go ahead and save you from embarrassing yourself? BTW, if you think I have time to read all the comments you are also mistaken. I actually noticed the problem when someone linked to it and sent a lot of traffic my way. He of course, was as immature as all liberals.

"Major Update"

SS Strata. Your protestations would be more credible, had the bogusness of the quote not been pointed out to you earlier, twice in this very thread. (see, my factcheck.org posts)

Of course I cannot fact check the news media,

LOL. First, calling Frank Gaffney part of the "news media" is bit of a leap. And, of course, you cannot be expected to hoof it out to the rough and tumble reporter's street, to ascertain the truth or falsity of this "breaking news" on the Lincoln quote. It is, however, much welcomed that you finally acknowledge that your daily multiple bloviations on items in the media is something that you can't be expected to (and do not) "fact check", even when you easily could, right from your cozy-chair. Kudos.

Strataspheristas should be advised quoting Mr. Lincoln can be dangerous. In response to a ginned up war, Mr. Lincoln gave his Spot Resolution speech in Congress, decrying the Mexican War and challenging President Polk to specify the exact spot on which Mexico had, in the words of Polk's war message, "shed American blood upon the American soil."

When it is clear that an Administration has lead a nation into an elective war based on confabulated reports of Weapons of Mass Destruction and fictitious alliances between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, Lincoln would have been the first Republican to stand up and demand that George Bush justify his ill-advised escalation of the war in Iraq.
