Changing Electorate
The Pew Research Center recently came out with a vast survey of the political landscape which captures the continued shifting of the American electorate towards the right-center of the political spectrum. Pew still views their data from the dated prism where liberal ideaology ruled the day. But they grudgingly see the conservative movement winning over the independent middle of the electorate.
With near parity on political party affiliation between the dems and reps, the middle is where to watch for the flow of electorate – which way is opinion drifting. What Pew does not recognize is the way the liberal element of the population is isolating itself from the rest of the country. Liberals make up 20% of populace, while democrats make up 34%. In other words, the democrat party is distilling down to its most extreme core, now possibly 2/3rds liberal with an ever shrinking “moderate” element.
While PEW tries to define serious fracture points that spell trouble for the various (and somewhat arbritrary) groupings on the right, the fracture line on the left is clearly evident and becoming quite deep. And of course this is religion.
I must note I am not a religous person in the sense of associating with a specific religion, but I am spiritual and can relate to many religious concepts and constructs. I am appalled at the lack of tolerance secularists have for people of religion these days. And it is this out of control dislike from the seculurists (which PEW totally misses in their assessment) for their religious liberals and democrats which will chase more and more people away from the left and into the middle and right – right into the open arms of the republicans.
