Diyala Is Turning On al-Qaeda
George Bush could end his presidency on a surprising high note: success in Iraq. Of course the Bush haters left and right will do all they can to pillory the man. But the facts could tell a very different story if things keep moving the direction they are going in Diyala Province – the last large stronghold of al-Qaeda.
U.S. forces have begun arming nationalist guerrillas and former Saddam Hussein loyalists — and coordinating tactics — in a marriage of convenience against al Qaeda radicals in one of Iraq’s most violent provinces, senior U.S. commanders tell CNN.
This new alliance, a result of the deepening divisions among Iraqi insurgent factions, was on display earlier this week at a highway intersection in the town of Tahrir. There, a group of some 15 insurgents publicly chanted: “Death to al Qaeda.”
Death to al-Qaeda! Imagine that. Too bad we don’t have video of that to show on the evening news. That would be a nice chunk of crow to serve up for the Surrendercrats and the SurrenderMedia. It must be really starting to turn because this story is from one of the big SurrenderMedia outlets: CNN.
This result was actually just a matter of time. Why? Because of the nature of our enemy:
“The al Qaeda organization has dominated and humiliated Sunnis, Shiites and jihadis. It has forced people from their homes. They can’t get enough blood. They killed many honest scholars, preachers and loyal mujahedeen,” one of the group’s spokesmen read from a written manifesto.

Nationalist insurgents say al Qaeda excesses are behind their falling-out. Several sources said al Qaeda members burned a 7-year-old child alive and murdered women and other children in the towns and villages around the provincial capital of Baquba. They did not give names or dates to back up their claims.
This is why George Bush is actually a much greater leader than those who snipe at him from Congress and elsewhere. Bush has shown perseverance and determination in this matter. al-Qaeda is an Islamo Fascist organization. The only difference between them and the Nazis is the rationalization for the bloodthirst and the language they speak. And make no mistake, this is an Iraq-wide phenomena happening:
The changing strategy isn’t just confined to Diyala, according to U.S. officials. Gen. David Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, told CNN Thursday that tribal forces in Anbar, the restive Sunni province west of the Iraqi capital, have “decided to oppose al Qaeda and fight with the coalition forces against them.”
“What’s taken place in Anbar is almost breathtaking,” he said. “In the last several months, tribes that turned a blind eye to what al Qaeda was doing in that province are now opposing al Qaeda very vigorously. And the level of violence in Anbar has plummeted, although there clearly is still work to be done.”
Victory is not assured, any more than it was in WW II after the invasion at Normandy. But we are on a path that is headed in that direction. And Bush, the great conservative, could go down in history overshadowing all those petty critics who snipe at him from the left and the right. Bush does something few people can muster. He accomplishes things. If he accomplishes his plan for Iraq the world will owe him a debt of gratitude. And a lot of people will owe him an apology.
Let’s hope so. I have many concerns due to studying Islam, the Quaran,The Hadith, Sharia Law, Islamic History, etc. But I am cautiously Optomistic. I won’t bother to raise my concerns, because if you don’t have a good knowledge of Islamic History and Traditions, you won’t understand. Let’s pray it works and leave it at that.

Man, I rarely indulge before noon – but would somebody pass that Kool-Aid over this way – this must be a great batch.
If success in Iraq were merely defeating al-Qaeda it would be one thing. But al-Qaeda’s avowed purpose – AND METHOD – is to engage the US around the world and bleed it by the death of 1,000 cuts.
Osama bin Laden – still at least the figurehead leader of al-Qaeda, made this astonisingly clear in his many statements about his global jihad. Based on the template created in Afghanistan against the Soviets – and using our dollars and weapons – the Mujah were able to defeat the Soviet Union by draining resources through asymmetric warfare.
This is exactly what they have done in Iraq – thanks to Bush’s ill-advised decision to invade. The US has tied up 150,000 troops; we’ve spent hundred of billions of dollars; we’ve lost 3,500 troops and countless wounded – and the hidden costs of providing for those wounded will continue for 40-50 years. The total potential costs of this war are over 2 trillion dollars. Enough to fund Social Security for the next 75 years. And its been wasted on a rat hole in the desert.
Al-Qaeda is the LEAST of our problems in Iraq – representing a small percentage (maybe 5%) of the fighters. We also have Sunni insurgents; we’ve got the Shia militia. We have Iraqi police setting roadside bombs and killing US troops. We’ve got an entire Iraqi army infiltrated with tribal elements, who at any moment may be at each other’s throats. We’ve got a majority-Shia government that aligns itself with Iran and supports Shia insurgents in Lebanon and Palestine.
We’ve got allies (the Turks) violating the territorial integrity of Iraq in order to go after the Kurds (our allies) in the north of Iraq. We’ve got Kurds blurring the boundaries between Iraq and Iran, and contributiing to the instability of the region.
We’ve funded the world’s most expensive terrorist training ground – one that terrorists groups from around the globe use to send their young recruits to get experience in waging asymmetric war, e.g., the Taliban in Afghanistan is now using the shaped charge IED’s against US troops there.
So let Diyala turn on al-Qaeda. Al-Qaeda don’t care. The whole purpose of their presence in Iraq is to cause the US to expend far more resources in attempting to suppress al-Qaeda than al-Qaeda expends to trigger our responses. This is right out of Osama’s game plan – one he was kind enough to print and distribute BEFORE we ever got involved.
Bush is like Charlie Brown trying to kick that football one more time. And al-Qaeda is Lucy, yanking the football out just prior to contact. All the feel good crap in the world from Gen. Petraeus is just window dressing.
Once again – I urge you to read Imperial Hubris. It makes crystal clear what al-Qaeda’s intent is.

The Mujahideen, resisted the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, with Massive US and CIA help, arms, Stingers, 120MM mortars, etc.
The ONLY reason they “won”, is a) because of what we provided, and b) because the Soviet Union, had been a paper tiger for years, and for years on the verge of economic and political collapse, because of Communism, etc.!
The “Taliban” came from Pakistan, AFTER the Soviet Union withdrew from Afghanistan, and hence weren’t even part of the fight, FACT!
And the so-called “Afghan Arab”, people like Bin Laden and Zawahiri, contributed very little to nothing, of the fight in Afghanistan, the Mujahideen hated them, and did their best to marginalize them, and contrary to Popular Leftist fiction, such as what you peddle, the US Government, and the CIA NEVER, and I repeat NEVER supplied Bin Laden, “Al Qaeda”, and the “Afghan Arabs” with arms, supplies, money, logistical support, nada!

For crying out loud: my post said specifically that ” the Mujah were able to defeat the Soviets thru asymmetic warfare”. I never said bin Laden or the Arabs defeated the Soviets. I said the Mujad did. Learn to friggin’ read.
But, bin Laden was in Afghanistan, he provided resources, and established networks that became al-Qaeda. And speaking of our support – in retrospect we would have been a whole lot smarter NOT to have supported the Muj – leading as it did to the Taliban government in Afghanistan AND the rise of al-Qaeda.

3. Do you deny that it was bin Laden’s explicit plan to draw the West into conflict in which our expeinditure of resources far exceeds theirs? That is, asymmetirc conflict?

7. I never said that CIA support of the Mujah lead to the Taliban. What I said was that the defeat of the Russians and the victory of the Mujah lead to the Taliban – and it clearly did. I didn’t say there were no intervening forces, e.g., Pakistan and the Saudis – but that might well have not been possible if the Soviets had not been defeated first. It’s called “unintended consequences” – and even someone as logically challenged as you clearly are would have to admit that in the chronology of Afghanistan, the defeat of the Russians is followed by the rise of the Taliban.

The entity called “al-Qaeda” did not formally exist until after the Russians had left Afghanistan, and in fact the group bin-Laden had been funding during the war against the Soviets(Maktab al-Khidmat) was based in Pakistan and provided training, money and support for Muslims who crossed the border into Afghanistan to fight. However, this does not affect the fact that bin Laden took the lesson of asymmetry to heart, and made it the center of his grandiose scheme to lure the West into conflict.
