GOP Admits Status Quo Not Enough On Immigration

Published by at 8:13 pm under All General Discussions,Illegal Immigration

In a clear attempt to cover their BS’ing behinds, the stalwart GOP immigration hypochondriacs are basically admitting the resources contained in the immigration bill they gleefully tanked are indeed needed – because we cannot fight terrorism and round up illegal nannies with the stretched resources we have:

Senior GOP senators are embracing an eleventh-hour plan to pass an emergency supplemental bill for more border security money as a strategy to win over Republicans who have balked at the bipartisan immigration bill languishing in the Senate.

But even as the emergency-spending approach gained momentum yesterday during President Bush’s rare visit to the Senate, the immigration bill’s strongest supporters warned that time is running out for an agreement to bring the measure back to the floor.

Bush made no commitments as to whether he would propose an emergency supplemental bill — an idea floated by Georgia Republicans Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss.

The false reporting no this story is stunning. The emergency funding bill is designed to be a pretend bandaid to cover for the stupidity of leaving all those criminals on our streets. As I posted earlier on this story, the fence will not do a damn thing about legal immigrants who overstay their welcome. They walk right through it.

But the story also cleary tells the brutal truth. It is illegals or terrorists. The comprehensive bill stalled in the Senate provided a way for illegal aliens who have not committed violent crimes to step forward, pay their debt to society (sometimes up to $9K per person) and separate themselves from the hard criminals and anyone else hiding amongst them. The tamper proof ID would be the indication of a cleared worker and someone of interest. This would reduce the sifting problem for law enforcement from 12 million to around 2-3 million. Still daunting, but four times better.

So now the far right is (a) blaming Sen Reid for what they crowed they did just lack week and (b) trying to find some money to pretende the FUBAR system we have now will work. We need the strengthened laws. We need the long term (not emergency) resources so we can build up the enforcement force we need. This will take years to do. We need a guest worker program and tamper-proof IDs so we know who has been checked and processed.

What we don’t need is whimpy band-aids like this nonsense. It would do NOTHING long term. It is a fig leaf the far right is grasping at, because they know down deep there are many things in that comprehensive bill that would fix the status quo. Money was just one of them.

Again they try and peal off some BS, like the fence last year (which is getting built, welcome to Federal programs). Delay and BS and smear. What a waste. I am all for adding funds or ramping up expenditures to the comprehensive bill. But this should not be in place of a real plan. The far right gets wilder at each turn. We could do what we needed with the status quo, and now it is an emergency to fix the status quo. Incoherent to the end. Add the money and pass the entire bill. And apologize to all us traitors while you are at it.

    aj,

you are spinning so much you must be going bald…….this is from the letter sent by the senators to bush and the others:

“We believe the way to build greater support for immigration reform in the United States Senate and among the American public is to regain the trust in the ability of the federal government to responsibly administer immigration programs and enforce immigration laws. There is bipartisan agreement that we need to secure our borders first, and we believe this approach will serve as a platform towards addressing the other issues surrounding immigration reform.
To that end, we believe that you and your administration could alleviate many of the fears of our constituents by calling for an emergency supplemental bill to fully fund the border and interior security initiatives contained in legislation currently pending in the Senate, as well as any outstanding existing authorizations. Such a move would show your commitment to securing the border first and to stopping the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into our nation. It will also work towards restoring the credibility of the federal government on this critical issue.”

this is exactly what myself and others here and 72% of all americans have been saying since aug 05. why you and the other hypo’s are having trouble understanding this is beyond me and the others……

    this from an earlier post:

you have much to learn grasshoppers……
i told you last year when you were frantically trying to put lipstick on that last pig it had no chance and i told you three days ago this bill has no chance as it was written. i told you over a year ago what the final bill will look like. it will be a sealed border before anything else is even considered–not the faux enforcement in this and the last bill. you really should read the document. only naive people believe that the government, democratic or republican, will all of a sudden start enforcing new immigration laws. let’s see, we have heard that song and dance since the 60’s. in fact it was kennedy himself that said the 1986 bill would be final resolution. now 15-20 million more illegals later, he cheerfully does his best gilda radner, “never mind”! perhaps your therapist can help you to understand why you desperately want to believe politicans would do something now that they have never done before in regards to immigration. in fact, they think you are so stupid that the dems cheerfully boasted after november 4th that the 800 miles of fence approved with such fanfare last fall would never get funded or if it did it would never get spent. “well i do declare”, as someone in Gone with the Wind would say, seven months later rumor has it that only two miles were built and construction was halted. yes once again our trustworthy government carries out signed law and the will of the people in regards to immigration policy.

AJ: you’ve completely lost ALL perspective; you’re so desperate to get yourself out of your own special corner, you painted YOURSELF into, you’re just plain inventing stuff now; absolutely incredible!

I have never seen any Blogger so completely lose it, professionally, over one issue.

It’d be one thing, to come out and say “Okay, I was wrong”, but not you; now you’re making stuff up, continually trying to post you’re way out of your OWN ANLYSIS, etc.

This is starting to get sad actually!

All I know is that for the first time since this bill saw the light of day Fred Barnes is not optimistic it will pass. There is talk now on introducing a suplemental funding bill to first pay for last year’s border security bill which included additional border agents and ICE resources. That never got funded last year after it was passed – even though Duncan Hunter got funding for the fence which, at the rate they are building it, the 700+ miles will take about 9 years to complete.

Barnes was all for this bill but now he’s not sure that they can get the 60 votes to bring it back on the floor for debate. Reid says the Dems only have 38 votes to bring it back on the floor which means the Reps will need 22 to get it done and he won’t even attempt it unless McCain and Kyl can assure him they have the 22 votes.

    We’ll see what happens next.
