The people around them do what they are told..perhaps not because they even believe in it, or perhaps not becuase they want to..but because they fear what might happen to them if they do not. As a for instance, when AlQueda takes over some small village, they establish “their” version of law…which includes no smoking. When they caught people smoking..they chopped off all their fingers so they cannot smoke. Smoking pretty much stopped.

It’s the arab law of negociation 101….what you give up, means less to you than the only alternative they have left you with, that they stand to gain from. The trick is to pin you into this situation. It means…you’ll gladly give up smoking…when the other choice is to loose your fingers. And to them, that is your choice…smoke, or loose fingers. They never acknowledge that they are the ones who framed these alternatives through intimidation or violence or hostage taking or etc. Those are simply methods to arrive at the decision “you” need to make. This is the law they live by, and it is pervasive in all parts of their culture…even the parts that have long become accepted as social norms.

In many cases..people do what they want because they fear what would happen to them if they did not. Women, who may not believe in wearing burkha…wear it anyway in certain areas, for fear of what would happen to them should they not. This, of course..is the religion of “tollerance”. (except for those things they do not tollerate).

Al Queda has been killing and terrorizing all through 2006. I’m not sure they have another tactic in this situation.

They can only terrorize more.

OBL was always telling the Big Z before he got pasted that it was wrong to do the Muslim on Muslim thing and he turned a deaf ear to it.

So now in a lot of cases you have ones who sort of believe but don’t buy the whole package running the local ops, including some of them being the jackboots who used to do the same thing on individual basis under Saddam with his repressive tactics.

Only now they are doing it to groups rather than individuals and you have to wonder which approach really satisfies them the most.

Still with bodies left in the street still showing signs of individual torture, they are falling back to their old habits as fill in between the big events.

In the big picture, if all these branches of the tree can’t get on message, it will be a long term fight, but a matter of divide and conquer and isolation by breaking communication/logistic links.
