Romney Opposed Ronald Reagan?

Published by at 9:59 pm under 2008 Elections,All General Discussions

I have to wonder about all those pure “Reagan Conservatives” who are backing the supposedly ‘true’ conservative Mitt Romney – as this McCain campaign ad illustrates:

So Mitt Romney opposed Reagan. And he is the true Reagan conservative? Who is feeding who a bunch of propaganda?Who is feeding who a bunch of propaganda? Why is it so many say McCain will change his stripes after the election when it is clear the chameleon apparently is actually Romney?

I never worried about who was most like Regan. I have always been more concerned with who is most competent — liberal or conservative. Since you are posting ads, let’s examine .

Sad to say, at this point McCain is the GOP’s only hope.

A lot of people did not like Reagan. I know old farmers who to this day bitch about Ronald Reagans. And a lot of them are veterans too.

Fred Thompson supported Ford in 76 and Baker in 80.

A lot of people thought Reagan was just a tad TOO inclusive. They also thought he was too old. They also thought an old union organizer, Hollywood actor, former Democrat was no standard bearer for the GOP. They thought he was soft and too willing to compromise.

It was only after he died that he became a myth. Don’t get me wrong, I respect the man, but I am old enough to remember the real Reagan.

The truth about Romney will now start coming out. The conservative pseudo-intelligentia threw all their weight behind a guy who is a moderate by all definitions and changed his tune when it became opportunistic. Then they turned against a pro-life, pro-defense, pro-fiscal responsibility candidate.

I think that’s the definition of insanity.

All your doing is PROVING what real conservatives (not the current pro-war democrat type that has invaded the R party) have been saying all along!

There are NO conservatives running…not a one….not anyone even remotely conservative.

They are all just democrat socialist big-government fans who happen to be pro-war so they can run on the R ticket.

    Hans Solo,

You mean I am proving what I have been saying for a year now? OK – I agree. And you think this bothers people???

  7. WWS says:

And a clarification for Hans – there *were* some “real conservatives” running, like Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter. How many votes did they get again?

    BTW,

For all those who think I hate Romney (and missed all my posts preferring Rudy or Mitt over Huck and McCain) I posted this because I had not known Mitt ran against Reaganism at one time. It came as a total shock to me that the man all the “Reagan Conservatives” are pushing is on the record opposing Reagan.

So don’t think I am pushing for McCain (I am pushing to defeat the Dems). You have to admit the duplicity in calling Mitt the true Reagan conservative given these statements from when Reagan was still a force in America are pretty damning.

This video has been out there for a while. I saw it a long time ago. I think Romney said that when he was running against Ted Kennedy in Massachusetts (Senate) — and he was obviously trying to separate himself from Reagan as an “Independent” to draw independent and less liberal Dems into his camp. Yes, it is pandering to get votes; and,, this was overboard, and correctly used against him. However, he was a conservative running for office in one of the most liberal states we have and it was a decade+ ago.

On the other hand, McCain is on video somewhere ( in 2004) saying:

” I think the Democratic Party is a fine party, and I have no problems with it, in their views and in their philosophy.” while it was reported that he was thinking of switching parties. And, that was four years ago, while a sitting Republican Senator, in a red state.

There were no Reagans’s in this race, and no one thought there was. I just found Romney’s overall record to be more like the overall Reagan philosophy than McCain’s. And, Romney was atleast expressing the Reagan philosiophy vs McCain’s adopting Democrat philosophies too, too often.

Romney separated himself from Reagan to win an electin. McCain separates himself from Reagan to push forth policy.

Either way, it is McCain’s time to run now. Romney will be able to champion conservative causes and build credibility. He’ll always have to explain his prior statements. It will always dog him. Just like McCain’s prior actions will always dog him.
