Able Danger News Alert Update XIV
If this is true we may finally begin to get some answers on Able Danger
Rep. Curt Weldon said Monday that one or more members of an elite team of military intelligence officers who had identified al Qaeda hijacker Mohamed Atta as a terrorist threat two years before he led the 9/11 attacks are prepared to go public.
“I can guarantee you that you will be able to have one on your show,” Weldon told ABC Radio host Sean Hannity. “You might want to go with your TV show with this, because it will be a major story,” the Pennsylvania Republican urged. “And you can interview him directly.”
…
The House Armed Services Committee member also revealed that an FBI witness has confirmed attempts by the Able Danger team to share information about Atta.“We even now have located the FBI liaison officer who they talked to about setting up the meetings [with the FBI],” he told Hannity. “That person acknowledged that there was a request made to formally bring the FBI in.
You know folks, what we have here is the same set of facts we had all along – except the 9-11 commission has stated they have no record of Atta’s name in their files or notes related to Able Danger. I said it before and will say it again – if they did miss this news, why would they be surprised it is not in their files?
UPDDATE:
Jim Geraghty has been doing some digging and learned the Pentagon will be issuing its news on Able Danger soon (see here) – which was one thing I did mention to note in the Times piece: The DoD did not comment with the 9-11 commission’s denial as expected.
UPDATE II:
Sorry folks, been at meetings. It appears we may get some answers tonight. My betting still is that Able Danger did have a link to Atta or else the denials would be flying. Here is a supposedly liberal skeptic’s post on the subject [hat tip John Podhoretz at NRO’s Corner]
Delco Times columnist Gil Spencer, who has long covered Curt Weldon’s Pennsylvania district, has just interviewed the Able Danger official who is going public tonight on Fox News. Spencer is the first journalist I am aware of to reveal the identity of the Able Danger official who originally briefed the 9/11 commission staff about Able Danger’s findings back in October 2003 at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan. That official is DIA civilian and Army reservist Ltn. Col. Tony Shaffer. He served in a liaison capacity between Able Danger and the Special Operations Command (SOCOM) in Tampa, Florida, and he flew into Afghanistan with special ops in a boots on the ground capacity. (Shaffer confirmed to Spencer that he is indeed the “Anonymous” who has posted some comments about Able Danger over at Inteldump, by the way.)
…
Shaffer says that the Able Danger team identified these individuals (previously reported as having included Atta, al-Shehi, al-Mihdhar and al-Hazmi) as part of the “Brooklyn cell,” but what exactly they had on them, even if they had their names, is still very murky and unclear from this interview.
If true this is going to be a rocking night!
The is confirmation in this for some theories Mac’s Mind has been touting as well involing General Schoomaker.
UPDATE III:
More breaking news at the NYTimes, looks like the story is bubbling over finally.
have you looked at http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20050815-115920-6161r.htm ?
Andy McCarthy of NPR writes about this at The Corner:

looks to me the story is far from being over.
