Ahhh. I don't post comments very much. There are too many really annoying people that post on sites like this. I like the 'yeah, it was a speech- that usually involves talking' thing. You threw in the 'would you like a magic trick' thing, too. I can tell your a funny guy. You clipped my comment, too, to make what I meant unclear. I know how this works. I know where you're coming from and you know where I'm coming from, but we'll go back and forth with you twisting my words and moving your rhetorical target so that nothing can be resolved and your ego can be satisfied. No thanks.

<b>"The whole, “I love this country, and so do you, and so does John McCain. [...]”, again, is just talk."</b>

Well... yeah. He was making a speech. In general, that involves talking.

Would you have a prefered a Powerpoint presentation? Pie charts? Maybe a magic trick?

<b>"And Pat Buchanon saying that it’s not a liberal speech is absurd."</b>

Actually, I agree with you on that one. That was the one thing he said that actually made me think, "Umm - what??"

<a href="http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/08/the-hope-we-con.html" rel="nofollow">Andrew Sullivan</a> agrees with both of us:

"It was a liberal speech, more unabashedly, unashamedly liberal than any Democratic acceptance speech since the great era of American liberalism. But it made the case for that liberalism - in the context of the decline of the American dream, and the rise of cynicism and the collapse of cultural unity. His ability to portray that liberalism as a patriotic, unifying, ennobling tradition makes him the most lethal and remarkable Democratic figure since John F Kennedy."

I understand that you are an Obama supporter. I'm sorry, but like most of what Obama has done, from his "race" speech to the Berlin speech, it causes initial euphoria in many people (including those in the media) because it's so well done. But, when you reflect on it, you realize that it just raises questions.

The whole, "I love this country, and so do you, and so does John McCain. The men and women who serve in our battlefields may be Democrats and Republicans and Independents, but they have fought together and they have bled together and they have died together under the same proud flag. They have not served a red America or a blue America, they have served the United States of America", again, is just talk. Obama has not been a I-bleed-red-white-and-blue guy. Personally, I think it's OK to not be the most patriotic person in the world. But don't claim to be when you are clearly not.

And Pat Buchanon saying that it's not a liberal speech is absurd. Now, I'm not a Buchanon fan, it's true, but he's just wrong. Virtually that entire speech was in line with liberal orthodoxy of the past 35 years. Probably the only partial departure was the part on cutting taxes on "95%" (again, specifics unclear as to exactly who he's talking about or how he's going to do it) of the Americans, but that's minor.

Hey, you know who else hates America?

<a href="http://www.balloon-juice.com/?p=11171" rel="nofollow">Pat Buchanon</a>:

"It was a genuinely outstanding speech. It was magnificent. I saw Cuomo's speech, I saw Kennedy in '80, I saw Douglas MacArthur, I've even seen Martin Luther King. This is the greatest convention speech and probably the most important because, unlike Cuomo and the other - this is an acceptance speech. This came out of the heart of America, and he went at the heart of America. This wasn't a liberal speech at all. This is a deeply, deeply sensitive speech - it had wit, it had humor, and when he used the needle on McCain, he stuck it into McCain. [...]

This man is a professional orator, and he's a writer of his own speeches. But let me read it, because here's where you get into the roll and the cadence, and how a speaker can really pound a point home. He says:

Now, that is how you bring people off their feet - by pulling at their heart."

So, yeah - y'all keep on going with the idea that it's just everybody else that's gone batshit insane.

Very strange situation. There are fundamental problems that remain for Obama (and I'm starting to think they will not be resolved before election day). I haven't been around that long, I guess, but I don't think there has ever been a candidate who is more of an unknown, even to his staunch supporters. What motivated his father? his mother? him, when he was a boy? a young adult? For that matter, what motivates him now?

The video, for example, like a lot of material on Obama's life, just causes you to have more questions. He talks about how much his parents believed in America. But his father loved the United States so much that he left and never came back. You couldn't even get that guy to come back to visit! His mother loved it so much, she moved with Barack to Indonesia.

There are things about his life that will disturb the average voter, I think. It's too novel. Have we ever had a President (aside from the founding generation) whose father was not only not a U.S. citizen, but never had any interest in becoming one? Have we ever had one (again, aside from early in U.S. history) who was a also citizen of another country during part of his own life (he was adopted by an Indonesian man, after all)?

It's hard to get a coherent picture of Obama's life.

What a piece of work this BO is. Incredible speaking skills completely wasted on a State of DisUnion speech. I could stomach only about 20 minutes of it just enough to get the gist of the entirety. Briefly,

Bush Sucks and by association McCain Sucks 90% of the time.

Ask not what you can do for your country, demand that your country do something for you.

BO has no clue on any matter concerning the projection of this countries force and power. Zip, Zero Nada.... It went something like "I will get Osama Bin Laden when we have him in our sites... " what a moronic statement. Incredibly insulting to everyone serving in the military. Also equally moronic "John McCain says he will go anywhere in the world, anytime, anyplace to get Osama Bin Laden, yet he will not go into a cave and get him now"

Is anyone actually stupid enough to believe the great and powerfull BO will actually cut taxes? Remember, all he has to do is let 99% of the Bush tax cut expire and he can still claim he actually cut taxes when in fact his inaction will result in a massive tax increase for all! Be carefull of Washington DC speak on these matters as these guys regularly claim they reduce the size of Government merely by not growing it as fast as planned.

BO is a total narciscist who clearly thinks we are all deluded by his grandeur.

Just a couple of things that jumped out at me last night from an overall unimpressive speech:

Abortion. As I listened to B-Rock pontificate about abortion all I could think of was his willingness to allow a baby to be born and then lie there and die without medical assistance because the child might be an inconvenience to its mother. I thought of Obie's willingness to allow a child to be partially born, feet first, only to have its skull punctured and its brain sucked out. I thought of my best friend and his wife and how much they want children. I thought of my own children and holding them in my arms for the first time and I kept thinking how could anyone think that it's OK to let a baby die because it's more convenient.

"We are our brother's keeper." I thought of how Obie has a half-brother living in a shack in Kenya on $1 per month. A brother who wonders where his next meal is coming from. A brother who lives in abject poverty while we listen to the new Messiah speaking down to us about taking care of one another. He also has a Grandmother living in squalor. There's a school in Kenya that is named after him. He promised to fund it yet he hasn't sent a dime. Obie has millions of dollars. He lives in a mansion. He is well connected. Yet he will not assist his own family.

Lots of soaring rhetoric and red meat for the mindless masses but anything more than a cursory glance reveals the fact that, once again, there is no substance. There is no depth.

I thought of Obie’s willingness to allow a child to be partially born, feet first, only to have its skull punctured and its brain sucked out. I thought of my own children and holding them in my arms for the first time and I kept thinking how could anyone think that it’s OK to let a baby die because it’s more convenient.

Yes, but he made history at the expense of a woman making history. Women did not get the right to vote in federal elections until the early 20's.

And btw, has Mr. Wonderful come up with any kind of legislation in the Senate that might help reach of any of these goals? Hell no. He and his friends have spent the last two years bitching about Bush, investigating Bush, calling Bush names and in general doing their damnedest to drive down Bush's numbers. The American people? Who are they? Oh yeah, the voters. Oh hell, we will just feed them the same line of crap we have been spewing for years.
