Plame Update, 10/27/05

Published by at 12:23 am under All General Discussions,Plame Game

OK, second season 24 starts off with a rush!

yeah, yeah – Plame Game – I know. I need life outside the Wilsons. New stuff only.

From LA Times:

Sources close to the case said they doubted that Fitzgerald would seek to extend the term of the jury, which expires Friday, raising the likelihood of a dramatic denouement soon.

Some lawyers close to the case suggested that Fitzgerald may have already secured at least one indictment but was keeping it under seal until he was ready to announce the results of his 22-month investigation.

One grand juror was overheard telling another juror, “See you Friday,” suggesting the possibility that the grand jury would continue to meet up to the last minute.

This from the Washington Post:

The prosecutor in the CIA leak investigation presented a summary of his case to a federal grand jury yesterday and is expected to announce a final decision on charges in the two-year-long probe tomorrow, according to people familiar with the case.

Even as Special Counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald wrapped up his case, the legal team of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove has been engaged in a furious effort to convince the prosecutor that Rove did not commit perjury during the course of the investigation, according to people close to the aide.

Fitzgerald’s legal team did not present the results of a grand jury vote to the court yesterday, which he is required to do within days of such a vote.

Yesterday’s three-hour grand jury session came after agents and prosecutors this week conducted last-minute interviews with Adam Levine, a member of the White House communications team at the time of the leak, about his conversations with Rove, and with Plame’s neighbors in the District.

Lots of leaks by people on the administrations side. Sign of confidence?

The term of the current grand jury has been extended once and cannot be lengthened again, according to federal rules.

Agreed. Get this over with and let the chips fall where they may.

A lawyer other than Luskin who is familiar with Rove’s legal strategy said the aide testified that he believed he was trading on publicly available information in discussing Plame with reporters.

Well, it is clear to me a strong case can be made that the NY Times and Washington Post knew of Valerie’s role since she had to be a supporting source to stories printed before Wilson penned his own Op-Ed.

AJ, I firmly believe what got the attention of the NYT and the WaPo was the very fact that Wilson’s wife was with CIA which he used to cement his credibility because he claimed insider information (through her). That’s what got those news organizations licking their chops, not Wilson’s one lousy visit to Niger. Had there not been the CIA connection, we may have never heard of the guy.

Just wishful thinking. We are fed information on “target letters”, a phone call from someone in Fitzgerald’s office to Wilson and a “visit” to neighbors one of whom is an attorney all within one week. Either again a lot of MSM spin or something to sleep on.
The other conclusion, we are all getting a bit punchy and drawing MSM type conclusions.
Great site AJ. Thanks for all your work.

If I were a grand juror, and the whole thing was over, this would be a very fun thing to say within earshot of the camera toting tent pitchers…not saying this is the case, just that I will remember it.

Which brings up a really super good point the media never asked…Why in the sam hill did Pincus or Kristof never confirm any of their sources information with the CIA?
