It is liberalism, spinelessness and misbegotten self-interest that "destroyed the republican brand" over the past decade. NOT conservatism. And thug republicans, selling out their nation and the American people for a good review from the NY TIMES have not changed one little bit. Ronald Reagan won two record landslide elections being true to conservative principles. John McCain betrayed those principles and the voters by clinging to "liberalism lite" in the nonsensical belief that disenchanted leftists would vote for him if only he were to sufficiently betray conservatives. Worked out real well, didn't it?

kathie:

You are right. They never understood that the party is like a ship and Bush was the Captain and they helped sink that ship. Covering their own butts and wussing out did not protect them, it only hurt the brand. Bush did not deserve that.

They really should look for allies where they can find them. There are Democrats like Ellsworth and Bayh of Indiana who have already balked at all this, they might be able to form some sort of Congressional coalition to at least force Obama to slow down.

Paul Ryan for Minority Leader. Paul Ryan for President. The blue dogs can be yellow dogs when Pelosi attacks them in the media. But Pelosi can't go too far because she needs their votes and they are in competative districts.

The GOP needs to give them cover for the Blue dogs to join them in opposition to Obama. Reagan was great at building coalitions. The GOP 30 years hence is lacking this vital skill.

Running away from President Bush's 8 years in office, is this group of Republicans first disgrace. In not standing up for Bush, allowing the media and the Democrats to vilify every day of his 8 years in office, leaves the Republican budget passers, pork spenders, in a less then reputable position. They can pretend all they want that they had nothing to do with the Bush Presidency's spending, but it is a big fat lie, we know it and so do they. It is almost as if this feckless bunch of elected officials were acting in opposition to their own President, daring the President to veto a budget of his own party as they threw in the kitchen sink.
