Yes, the Chicago White Sox won the World Series…

But the real news is that Harriet Miers has withdrawn her nomination. Too bad. The losers who won on the name calling and hyperventilating and rumor mongering won the day. I have never been more proud to be an independent. We don’t do hatchet jobs on our political brethren. Well, now we have a weakened President, fewer good justices probably willing to go through the grinder (when you have knives out in front and back stabbers behind you I can understand this position) and a lot of nasty gloating at NRO to suffer through.

Mark Coffey has set up a ‘watering hole’ on the news here.

But, even more important is this news regarding the Sunni’s efforts to embrace the political path in Iraq – which means the support for the insurgency will begin to drop off quickly.

For weeks before Iraq’s constitutional referendum this month, Iraqi guerrilla Abu Theeb traveled the countryside just north of Baghdad, stopping at as many Sunni Arab houses and villages as he could. Each time, his message to the farmers and tradesmen he met was the same: Members of the disgruntled Sunni minority should register to vote — and vote against the constitution.

“It is a new jihad,” said Abu Theeb, a nom de guerre that means “Father of the Wolf,” addressing a young nephew one night before the vote. “There is a time for fighting, and a time for politics.”

For Abu Theeb and many other Iraqi insurgents, this canvassing marked a fundamental shift in strategy, and one that would separate them from foreign-born fighters such as Abu Musab Zarqawi, the Jordanian who leads the group al Qaeda in Iraq.

And finally, I have been grappling with what to say about a true American Hero – Rosa Parks – since the word of her passing came out a few days back. This one, courageous women made America a much better place for me to grow up in, and to raise my kids. The echo of the old racism were still very much around when I grew up, but they thankfully died out as a grew older. Not knowing what to say beyond that, I turn it over to a real writer – Thomas Sowell – who provides a truly interesting history lesson on how Rosa’s actions came about. Thanks Rosa.

    Miers Withdraws!

My initial reaction…I would have liked to have seen her go to the hearings…but considering how divisive the nomination was, it’s probably for the better…more later…
The initial CNN report suggests that the ‘cover&#…

    AJ,
First, the White Sox did sweep the series but I am still very very proud of my Astros. They did not embarass us after coming such a long way back in the spring. I also think they showed a lot of class.

Secondly, I agree with you concerning Ms Miers. I discovered there’s a lot of mean people to the right of me and I thought I was pretty “right winged.”

    Miers withdraws:

President Bush on Thursday accepted the withdrawal of Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, according to a statement from the White House.
In her letter to the president, Miers said she was “concerned that the confirmation pro…

I don’t assume the president is going to lose. As a matter of fact, BECAUSE he traded Sammy Sosa, when he managed a Texas baseball team; and Sosa was traded because he wasn’t a TEAM PLAYER … There was nothing wrong with his stats … I don’t think the Evangelicals have what to celebrate, yet.

Yesterday, Danforth, a former Senator from Missouri, got his remarks flashed up at Drudge. Basically, he claims the “evangelical stranglehold of the GOP” is a bad thing. And, more moderate voices need to be at the levers of power.

Our president is a DO-ER. Just like Arik Sharon, who just dealt with his settlers. The police and military were trained to handle civil disobedience. And, Sharon did not go to the media to dump on anybody. He did what was necessary for his country. And, the light-weight, Bibi Netanyahu didn’t win. Media battles have been losing propositions for awhile, I think.

Among Bush’s choices? Not to send anyone up just yet. Because O’Connor is working at the Supremes. Hearing cases. And, she might actually like being with John Roberts, the new chief, for his first, maybe even his 2nd term? Why not realize the president took his time going into Afghanistan. And, then Iraq. I know back in 2002, I panicked. But he went in. And, not on weather reports! He didn’t take the overhead bombing first, strategy, either. Tommy Franks went in and out in a couple of weeks, too. (Where are the screamers now, who said we didn’t have enough troops? Oh. You no longer hear this, huh?)

IF Bush doesn’t fill O’Connor’s seat (and she’s still in it, I might point out), why not think the heat will be on the Congress-critters? They’re coming up for a big election cycle in 2006. (And, Mark Steyn predicts the “Blue” will get PURPLE. Before you have to worry about Red States.)

I also think Bush will quietly trade away the evangelicals. And, adopt a posture that grows the GOP larger; by attracting voters who might otherwise pick democrats? Notice this. No evangelicals are in the mix. The center is free of insanity. And, the president won’t go to war against women. Nada.
