Terrye,

Of course - but that is a hypothetical that doesn't fit the policies proposed.

Harold, I was only talking the F-22. We have a lot of Navy right now. If we start losing carrier groups we pull out the big guns.

Militarily we cannot lose.

AJ, it takes five to seven years to build an aircraft carrier.

Burke-class destroyers take three years to build.

The amphibious vessels Marines use take 3-5 years to build depending on the class.

If we're caught short-handed in this regard, it's not a matter of just snapping our fingers and ordering some more. It will take eight to ten years, if not more.

AJ:

Oh please. "They" are the Chinese. The fact that they can not stand up to us did not stop them from developing this weapon in the first place. Obviously, they will not survive. The Soviet Union would not have survived either, but they still made plans to destroy the US anyway.

Redteam,

Big "if" there. And they need to deal with our nuclear submarines if they tried.

I am not saying there are no nations that cannot do some serious damage. My point is they will not survive to learn how much damage they did, and we would.

Sorry but there is no Navy capable of standing up to one of a carrier groups,

saw a story the other day where China has a weapons system that will take out a supercarrier within 12 minutes after launch.
If they can do that, they don't need a Navy, in fact, if they can do that and they are building 'supercarriers' themselves, they are not very smart because I'm damned sure we have a weapons system that can take out any ship they have also.

Defense is about the one place I hate to see real cuts, especially in these times,

and ESPECIALLY when 8 Billion is given to ACORN groups, instead.

I saw this at Hot Air, it is a quote from Sarah Palin:

“I am deeply concerned with North Korea’s development and testing program which has clear potential of impacting Alaska, a sovereign state of the United States, with a potentially nuclear armed warhead,” Governor Palin said. “I can’t emphasize enough how important it is that we continue to develop and perfect the global missile defense network. Alaska’s strategic location and the system in place here have proven invaluable in defending the nation.”

Governor Palin stressed the importance of Fort Greely and the need for continued funding for the Missile Defense Agency. The governor is firmly against U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates’ proposed $1.4 billion reduction of the Missile Defense Agency. Greely’s isolated location in Alaska as well as its strategic location in the Pacific allows for maximum security and development of the country’s only ground-based missile defense complex.

“Our early opposition to reduced funding for the Missile Defense Agency is proving to be well-founded during this turbulent time,” Governor Palin said. “I continue to support the development and implementation of a defensive missile shield based in Alaska. We are strategically placed to defend the critical assets of the United States and our allies in the Pacific Theater.”

I would not be so bothered by this if there was an across the board cut and the different department heads were given control over what was cut. I think Gates has been pretty good at his job overall. But this is just a way to pretend to save money, they can waste elsewhere. At least if it goes to the military it might serve some purpose for the rest of us. You know, the taxpayers.

AJ:

There is not a navy in the world capable of standing up to ours, so what? That is no reason to try and balance the budget on the back of the military. Democrats do this every damn time...and then something happens somewhere and loe and behold, we don't have the military we need. We are lacking men or equipment.

My problem is this:

Welcome to Crazy Town.
After the North Korean missile launch this weekend, Team Obama announced they will slash billions from the military including 1.4 billion from missile defense systems.

At the same time, President Obama found billions for a liberal activist group entwined in "a pattern of crimes ranging from voter fraud to a mob-style 'protection' racket."
