Corzine Sinking In NJ

Published by at 1:09 am under 2006 Elections,All General Discussions

Corzine is dropping really badly in the last week before the elections. There are three new polls out – all showing the race tightening fast [hat tip Alexander McClure at Polipundit}

A Fairleigh Dickinson University-PublicMind poll found the race was too close to call and that favorable ratings of both candidates declined from prior polls.

Forty-three percent of those polled favored Corzine, with 41 percent for Forrester. The poll of 410 likely voters was conducted from last Friday to Thursday and has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 5 percentage points. An FDU-PublicMind poll of likely voters released Oct. 28 gave Corzine a 44-37 lead, with a similar margin of error.

A WNBC/Marist poll gave Corzine an apparent lead with a 49-40 edge among likely voters, with 11 percent undecided. It was conducted Wednesday and Thursday among 430 likely voters and also has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

That poll also appeared to show that Corzine lost support between Wednesday and Thursday…

What caused the sudden drop? Apparently Corzine’s ex-wife had something to add to New Jersey’s gubernatorial debate:

The erosion of support for the Democratic U.S. senator appears to coincide with a harsh ad featuring comment from his ex-wife…

Well, for those of us outside of New Jersey, what possibly could be said that would have this kind of immediate impact? Well, you can see the ad here. Short and sweet and to the point! It is based on previous quote in the NY Times (of all places. Butthis NY Times story discusses the Joanne Corzine statements and the ad:

Mr. Corzine has refused to comment on the claim of his ex-wife, made several days ago, that he had an extramarital affair with Carla Katz, the president of a union that represents thousands of state workers. He has confirmed that he was later romantically involved with her and that he had given, and later forgiven, a $470,000 mortgage to her.

On Wednesday, Joanne Corzine, the ex-wife of Mr. Corzine, said that she believes that his pursuit of power had led him to abandon his principles by associating with Democratic party bosses and others that she considered unsuitable political partners.

Ouch. That’s going to leave a mark.
