Cool pictures!
Is it my fevered imagination, or are there no sunspots visible? or would they not be visible to an amateur photographer’s gear?
There have been very few sunspots for a couple of years now, and no sign yet that any are going to be showing up anytime soon.
The sun’s output is currently at the lowest level measured since modern record keeping began, and it seems to be stuck there.
Check out Anthony Watt’s blog http://wattsupwiththat.com/ for some very good scientific discussion that won’t see anywhere else. Leif Svalgard’s guest post this morning on the 10.7 radio flux measurements was particularly good, and is the kind of hard science that you will never see discussed by any of the mainstream press outlets.
I think you will enjoy researching the “maunder minimum,” which may be beginning to repeat.
here’s a good link to start with:

while my other comment with a couple of links is awaiting moderation, let me just say that you are correct, there are no sunspots visible. Sunspots have been very rare for a couple of years now.
The sun has gone cold, but officially no one is paying attention yet.
Pics like this are beyond surreal.
Cool!
