The Left Wing Media Calls On “W” to Save “The One”?

Update: Ed Morrissey calls on The Force – end Update

Somebody wake me up from this bizarre dream I seem to be having, because Maureen Dowd, Peter Beinart and Eugene Robinson are calling on President George W Bush to come rescue President Obama from the Mosque Madness:

There’s a new argument emerging among supporters of the Ground Zero mosque. Distressed by President Obama’s waffling on the issue, they’re calling on former President George W. Bush to announce his support for the project, because in this case Bush understands better than Obama the connection between the war on terror and the larger question of America’s relationship with Islam. It’s an extraordinary change of position for commentators who long argued that Bush had done grievous harm to America’s image in the Muslim world and that Obama represented a fresh start for the United States. Nevertheless, they are now seeing a different side of the former president.

What the …?  H/T The Corner for the heads up, but what in the world is going on here? First off, I doubt W would simply throw support to the GZM and its opportunistic backers for obvious reasons. I do think he would (and could) help motivate the GZM to drop all connections to Ground Zero and move away from the site. He should be called in to broker a face saving solution that unites.

But when did the Kool Aid wear off? Why did it take so long for these ideologues to realize President Bush carefully and skillfully charted a war against radical Islam while respecting and gaining moderate Muslim allies.

This just keeps getting better and better!

Bush should say nothing, of course. He’s been following a very strict path of not commenting on politics in any way, exactly as an ex-President should. There’s no reason for him to break that very ethical standard of behavior now.

But if he DID decide to say something, I would love to see him say something like “Well, it’s quite a situation. If the President thinks that he needs my help, he’s welcome to call me personally and ask for it.”

You KNOW Obama would rather gouge his own eyes out with a fork than ask the hated BOOOSH for any help!

and now I’m fantasizing about a meeting, and hearing GW say in his mild way, “Hey, that’s pretty nice. Hey, there’s my camera guy. Do you think you could bow, like you did to old King Abdullah? I never did that, but you did it real good. Just a quick little bow here, thass all. Thanks!”

“When common sense and decency ARE missing”, you beg someone with heaps of it to help out, and that would be President Bush.

The problem is that it is too late. This problem should have been solved years ago. My bet is that this “problem” didn’t just crop up in the last month. I wonder if Bloomberg’s position has anything to do with the BIG office he is trying to open in Dubai?

Anyway there is nothing more to say. The heart and head are on an irrational but real collision course that could have been avoided with a little timely diplomacy and wasn’t. Too bad our leaders are so out to lunch, or on vacation, or on the golf course, or just not up to the job.

“Last year, Obama gave you goose bumps, but I don’t think you’re going to see that this year,” said Alex McCluskey, co-owner of the Locker Room, who sold more than 4,000 “I vacationed with Obama’’ T-shirts last year. But so far this year, he said, his hot item is T-shirts of former President Bush asking, “Miss me yet?”
