Global Warming May Have Hit Its Peak

Published by at 1:17 pm under All General Discussions,Global Warming

We did experience a peak in the Earth’s temperatures in 1998 and 2001 (though NASA had to correct the record and note 5 of the hottest years were in the late 1930’s, including the hottest year). But since that period the global temperatures have remained steady, and this winter we are seeing some major drops in temperature – some even historic:

Al Gore says global warming is a planetary emergency. It is difficult to see how this can be so when record low temperatures are being set all over the world.

Since the mid-19th century, the mean global temperature has increased by 0.7 degrees Celsius. This slight warming is not unusual, and lies well within the range of natural variation. Carbon dioxide continues to build in the atmosphere, but the mean planetary temperature hasn’t increased significantly for nearly nine years. Antarctica is getting colder. Neither the intensity nor the frequency of hurricanes has increased. The 2007 season was the third-quietest since 1966. In 2006 not a single hurricane made landfall in the U.S.

South America this year experienced one of its coldest winters in decades. In Buenos Aires, snow fell for the first time since the year 1918. Dozens of homeless people died from exposure. In Peru, 200 people died from the cold and thousands more became infected with respiratory diseases. Crops failed, livestock perished, and the Peruvian government declared a state of emergency.

Unexpected bitter cold swept the entire Southern Hemisphere in 2007. Johannesburg, South Africa, had the first significant snowfall in 26 years. Australia experienced the coldest June ever. In northeastern Australia, the city of Townsville underwent the longest period of continuously cold weather since 1941. In New Zealand, the weather turned so cold that vineyards were endangered.

We are still at the very beginning of our understanding of global and solar system effects on our weather. Contrary to the nonsense in Bali the science is not settled and we have a lot to learn. What we will know very shortly (in a matter of 2-3 years) is whether the Global Warming Chicken Littles are right or wrong. That is because their latest predictions require significant rise in global temperature now to meet their predicted levels 10-15 years out. But since their models have now been scientifically proven to produce garbage the chances of their predictions coming true are on the order of winning a $50 million lottery with a single ticket.

Well gee this seems to be happening at the same time as the turn around in solar activity. Now if Mars lowers it’s global warming in parallel with us that could be an interesting linkage.

  2. crosspatch says:

A new peer reviewed paper is out today that basically says:

Our research demonstrates that the ongoing rise of atmospheric CO2 has only a minor influence on climate change. We must conclude, therefore, that attempts to control CO2 emissions are ineffective and pointless. – but very costly.

On another note: as for temperature, there really is NO evidence that the temperature of the climate is actually rising. For example … if you take ONLY Southern Hemisphere average temperature, there has been no change in the 20th century. North America’s peaked in 1933 and again in 1998 at roughly the same points. What is rising is the AVERAGE that is probably due to urbanization causing rises in recorded temperatures across Eurasia. Mainly the former Soviet Union and China. Those “increases” are causing the average to rise. But if those are taken OUT of the calculation, there is no rise, there is no global warming.

  3. crosspatch says:

Imagine if I take your temperature, my temperature, and someone else’s temperature every hour and produce an average. Now imaging that “someone else” gets sick and their temperature begins to rise. The AVERAGE of our temperatures rises but you and I are not sick. Global averages do not mean that there is global warming, even when the average rises. It simply means that SOME of the recorded locations rose.

Also a lot of the temperature data here not determined from satellites but all those temperature monitoring stations have been shown to be tilted from growth around the monitoring sites and some are just plain not meeting the original guidelines for installation.

If they could somehow figure out the adjustment factor for how much the current physical location has offset from the installation criteria the averages would likely be even a little lower.

  5. WWS says:

but it’s not just global warming, it’s “Climate Change”, dontcha know!

If the temp goes up, it’s man’s fault, but if it goes down, it’s man’s fault too. If there’s a flood it’s our fault. If there’s a drought we did it. If it’s windy it’s proof of global warming, if the winds stop its even more proof. See? All the “evidence” proves it!!!

  6. AJStrata says:

    WWS,

The correlation is clear – there is weather on Earth. There is humankind on Earth. QED humankind causes weather……

It’s a ‘Failure to Communicate© ‘… You forgot the first order contribution of “King George of Bush”……

  8. MerlinOS2 says:

Makes as much sense as one I saw a few months ago.

There are gays on the planet, there are polar bears on the planet ergo polar bears make people gay.

    DUH

  9. crosspatch says:

Climate warming since the mid 1800’s is in direct proportion to the number of pirates. As the number of pirates has declined, the climate has warmed. Pirates are a climate moderator. Now we may experience some cooling as the number of pirates off Somalia increases.

  10. scaulen says:

What if all this fighting against global warming throws the whole balance off and we spiral into global cooling, and a new ice age????!!!!!!1 Al Gore has doomed us all…. Oh GOD as I look out my window I see the encroaching ice age upon me now, snow every where, and more coming. Time to fire up the 100 watt bulbs and try to stay warm. Damn you Al Gore, inventor of the internet, Nobel prize winner, global killer!!!!1

  11. Dc says:

Actually, a few decades ago…Some of the same people DID in fact suggest there was global cooling

  12. VA Voter says:

    AJ,

I’m not a scientist but there is a simple test to put the lie to the global warming thingie.

Every weather station in the world has historical highs and lows for every day of the year going back for however long that station has been in existence.

On any given day the high and low temperature recorded that day is the highest, lowest or somewhere in between historical records for that day.

There has to be a way to count the number of record highs and lows (normalized for the number of years that station has been in existence) recorded by state, region, country or continent in any given month, quarter, season or year.

If there is global warming then the hockey stick effect would show the number of record highs increasing and the number of record lows decreasing. DUH!

Even Gore could compile this data. Could it be that this simple test disproves his premise?
